Profiles of who we are:

HU Charter Day & Alumni Achievement Award

The Honorable Rushern L. Baker III (7-81-A), County Executive, Prince George's County

After a two year hiatus, This is Alpha Chapter returns!  Publication of this history review will occur every other week.

Congratulations to the Honorable Bro. Rushern Baker III (7-81-A) for receiving the Alumni Achievement Award in the field of politics and public service from Howard University at this past weekend’s Charter Day Dinner.

Rushern is the 16th Son of The Mother Pearl to receive this distinguished honor.  You can say that Alpha Chapter has been there since day one!  The Alumni Achievement Award was first given in 1943 to three recipients:  Dr. Orville L. Ballard for his work in medicine, Zora Neale Hurston, the famed author for her work in literature, and Bro. Campbell C. Johnson (Alpha 1917), our 18th Grand Basileus, for public service (see right for pic).

Bro. Johnson started a tradition that has seen many Alpha Chapter Brothers receive this award from our alma mater, Howard University.  They included:

1947: Bro. Z. Alexander Looby (Alpha 1920) - famed civil rights attorney and our 17th Grand Basileus

1948: Bro. William Stuart Nelson (Alpha 1916) - Dean of the HU School of Religion, the first black President of Shaw University, the first President of Dillard University, mentor to Martin Luther King Jr. and the Frat’s first Director of Publicity (see the first Oracle in 1919)

1952: Bro. Dr. Clarence F. Holmes (Alpha 1914) - founded both the NAACP and grad chapters (Chi Phi) in Denver.  Our 6th Grand Basileus (he was Grand Basileus while in Dental School at Howard)
